Kilimanjaro: Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Day 2 starts for me with the same headache and nausea and clouds. We get to breakfast and it’s toast, porridge (like brown grits), and some form of eggs. The hike starts up rocky slopes. The hike was definitely more challenging today, but beautiful! The scenery changes as we move out of the rainforest into moorland. You can see the trees turning into shrubbery. There were a couple of times when I started to get dizzy and had to stop. I knew if this continued I’d be in trouble since we weren’t even in the dangerous altitudes yet. We stop for lunch that is a bag of stuff (boiled egg, some kind of sandwich, various breads, and some cookies). I go to the bathroom (they were outhouses with a hole in the floor) and there is a rodent in there. If I ever climb again, I’m paying the extra money for a private toilet! Closer to camp, the clouds begin to go away and the sun comes out. We get to a beautiful ridge with the mountain in the background and my headache finally goes away. At camp, they pull out chairs for us and we enjoy the view of the mountain and the beautiful weather. The mountain and the top were getting closer. This was by far my favorite camp.
